Valerian - a dose of calm from nature

Valerian - a dose of calm from nature

Valeriana (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial herb of the Valerianaceae family, also known as Valeriana. Valerian is an ancient herbal remedy known for its calming and sleep-inducing properties. It is native to Europe, northern Asia and parts of North America. The plant usually reaches a height of 1 to 1.5 meters and has a straight, coarse stem with simple, supportive leaves that are pinnate and toothed at their edges. Valerian blooms with small, pale pink or white flowers gathered in racemes.

Valerian has been used by humans for millennia in various cultures. The earliest records of its use come from ancient Rome and Greece. In the Middle Ages, it became popular among alchemists and healers, who considered the plant a magical remedy with protective and soothing properties. In the 16th century, valerian was used to treat insomnia and nervous disorders.

Valerian is a relatively easy herb to grow, preferring cool, moist sites and well-drained soil. Valerian seeds can be planted directly outdoors in spring or the following spring after winter dormancy. The plant can also grow successfully in pots, in which case it is important to provide sufficient space for its roots. Valerian is also propagated by transplanting seedlings, but this can be a little more difficult because of the plant's delicate roots. Valerian leaves and flowers can be harvested when fully developed. The stems are usually harvested in spring or after summer.

Valerian has a long history of use as an herbal remedy and is associated with a number of health benefits. It is primarily used for its calming properties and to aid sleep. It is available in various forms including capsules, tablets, extracts and tea. Many people have confirmed its beneficial effects for insomnia, but it is important to consult a doctor or naturopath before using it, especially if you take other medications or have health problems. Here are some of the main uses of the herb valerian:

  • Calming effect: Valerian is known for its calming properties and is used to relieve stress, anxiety and nervous tension. It can help reduce agitation and improve sleep quality.
  • Sleep aid: One of the main benefits of valerian is its ability to aid sleep. Many people use it for mild drowsiness and to improve insomnia problems.
  • Tension reduction: valerian can help with tension and stress, as it is thought to increase the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which has a calming effect on the nervous system.
  • Improving mood: There is evidence that valerian can improve mood in people with depressive conditions. This is linked to its ability to improve serotonin and noradrenaline levels in the brain.
  • Calming the nervous system: valerian is known for its calming effect on the nervous system and can be helpful for moderate headaches and migraines.
  • Helping to manage PMS (premenstrual syndrome):Valerian can help with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, such as nervousness, irritability and pain.
  • Helping relaxation in cramps: Valerian is used to relieve cramps in the muscles and stomach area.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) contains a variety of substances that are responsible for its healing properties. Here are some of the main ingredients found in the herb:

  • Valeric acids: These are alkyl carbonic acids, which are considered the main active constituents in valerian. They contribute to the herb's calming and sleep-inducing properties.
  • Valrates: these are glycosides that are also involved in the calming effects of valerian on the nervous system.
  • Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA): Valerian contains GABA or contains substances that stimulate its formation. GABA is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the sensation of relaxation and strengthening of the nervous system.
  • Isovalerian oil: this is the ingredient that gives valerian its characteristic smell. It is commonly used in herbal supplements and aromatherapy.
  • Flavonoids: These are antioxidants that can help fight free radicals and protect cells from damage.
  • Tannins: Valerian contains a small amount of tannins, which are astringent substances that can help relieve inflammation and improve the health of the oral cavity and throat.
  • Vitamins and minerals: the herb valerian contains various vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins (e.g. B6), potassium and calcium.

These are just some of the ingredients that can be found in valerian. The full composition can vary depending on the type of plant and growing conditions. Also, the extraction of valerian can be different, which affects the content of active ingredients in the product.

Most often the herb is anesthetized in the form of an extract or tablets:

  • Valerian tea:

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of ground dried valerian root. Allow to soak covered for about 5-10 minutes. Strain the tea and drink it before bed to aid your sleep.

  • Valerian extract:

You can buy ready-made valerian extract from a pharmacy or a supplement store. Follow the directions on the package regarding dosage and how to use.

  • Valerian capsules:

Like the extract, you can find ready-made capsules with valerian. Follow the directions on the package regarding dosage and how to use.

Although valerian is considered relatively safe, there are some contraindications and precautions to consider:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: It is not recommended to use valerian during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as there is insufficient research on its safety in relation to the baby.
  • People with liver disease or other kidney disease: valerian use may affect liver and kidney function, especially with long-term use or at high doses.
  • Individual sensitivity: some people may have allergic reactions or side effects from using valerian, so it is a good idea to test a small dose before using it regularly.
  • Combining intake with alcohol or barbiturates is not recommended: valerian may potentiate the relaxant actions of alcohol or sleep medications, which may lead to excessive drowsiness and fogginess.

It is advisable to consult a specialist before using it for medical purposes.
